SECOND WORLD WAR

As in world war one the netherlands tried to stay neutral. the neutrality in such a conflict comes engaged with the fact that if other states are fighting a war someone needs to produce goods for them. Here is where such counties as netherlands or spain found the benefit in a big conflict like any of the world wars.

but this time it wasn’t going to be that easy for the netherlands to stay out of the conflict. On May 10 1940 the nazi forces penetrated the dutch border. but it wasnt until May 14 1940 with the bombing of Rotterdam ordained by Adolf hitler when the dutch government collapse and the royal family and main government officials left the country to go to London or Canada.

by 1941 the occupiers had sent almost every single jew in the netherlands to concentration camps. and by the end of the conflict, up to 70% of the jewish population of the netherlands were killed.

Auschwitz-Birkenau

The Netherlands was occupied for 5 years, from 1940 till 1945 when with the surrounding of the nazi Germany every single territory occupied by them was returned to their nationals.

During the occupation the way of living changed in a really drastic way for the citizens. There was no freedom neither for the press nor the citizens themselves. people started listening and reading unlawful and forbidden radios and newspapers. The lack of food and primary goods such as clothes created the need for rational system which was used to distribute the food and goods fairly among the people. there was a resistance movement among the netherland's citizens against the nazi forces. It had a slow develop but by its counter intelligence, domestic sabotage and communications networks happened to be really helpful to the the allied forces. if anyone was discovered perpetrating such acts by the germans meant an immediate death sentence.

the war ended by the surrender of the nazis on May 5 1945.

If we talk about total casualties, by the end of the war more than 200,000 people died of war-related causes. over half were Holocaust victims, deported and murdered jews. There were also thousands of non-dutch jews who had fled to the netherlands from other countries seeking for safety like anne frank and her family.
