SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

The system of government of Netherlands is described as a consociational state, constitutional monarchy, a parliamentary representative democracy, and also a decentralized unitary state.

 

The kingdom of Netherlands practices a constitutional monarchy form of government .The monarchy was established in 1813 after the French were expelled from the country by the Prince of Orange and was confirmed in 1815. Constitutionally, the monarch heads the state and plays an important in establishing the government and the legislative process., the king has to sign all the laws approval by the parliament. Apart from that,The King has mostly representative functions. A council of ministers holds executive power.

Netherlands have male suffrage since 1917 and universal suffrage since 1919.

The Dutch political system.

  • Netherlands have different levels of government: The central Dutch government which takes care of national interests; provincial governments which cares about environmental, energy ,social works among others; municipal governments which deals about traffic, housing,social services, health care... and the fourth and the last level of government is the water boards, the one which manages water levels, water barriers, water quality...

Netherlands has 12 administrative regions namely: Drenthe, Fryslan, Flevoland, Zuid-Holland, Groningen, Zeeland, Gelderland, Limburg, Utrecht, Overijssel, Noord-Brabant, and Noord-Holland. Its capital is Amsterdam. The country is also divided into 388 municipalities The Netherlands also includes 6 overseas countries and territories in the Caribbean. These territories are not part of the EU.

  • The parliament.


The Dutch parliament is formed by two chambers. The Lower House and The Senate. Together the both chambers constituted The Estates-General.

The first chambre, The Lower House is in charge of the national budget and also have some rights This rights are the right of the legal initiative, the right of submitting amendments, the right to start its own inquires and the right of interpellation. The Lower House is constituted by 150 members and only political parties can take place on the elections.

The second chambre, The Senate is in charge of approval the laws without the right of amendment. It´s formed by 75 members.

  • The government.

The Netherlands is usually governed by coalitions. The primer minister is usually the leader of the party who won the elections, but as The Netherlands are usually governed in coalition, the prime minister is the leader of the party who had more seats in the elections. The primer minister is the head of the government.
