The Netherlands joins the European Union the first of January of 1958. The Netherlands was one of the founding countries of the European Union, with Italy, France, Germany, Belgium y Luxembough.
Why The Netherlands join the European Union?
After the Second World War, States needed to cooperate in order to ensure safety in economic issues. The Netherlands first join the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1952 together with Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg and West Germany in order to contribute an increase in economic growth. Then in 1957 these six countries signed the Treaties of Rome and created the EURATOM (European Atomic Energy Community)and the European Economic Community.
One important point about The Netherlands in the framework of the European Union occurs in 1958 when the ex-minister of agriculture of Netherlands was named the European Agriculture Commissioner. The idea was to create a common European policy with regard to agriculture. This reform has always been beneficiating The Netherlands until nowadays that The Netherlands is one of the largest exporters around the world.

As the European Union follows a system of cooperation among states. This means that not all states contribute the same , in other words, richer countries support poor countries. We´ll see how The Netherlands contribute and receive to European Union. With numbers of 2017, as we see in the official page of the European Union; the total EU spending in the Netherlands was 2417 billions while the total Dutch contribution to the European system was 4384 $ billions.
