Actualizado: 11 dic 2018

The Netherlands joins NATO, no longer keeping its neutrality policy.

Nato is an international organization related to politics and military issues with its principal aim is to guarantee the freedom and the security of the member states through politics and military methods. Nato was founded by 12 countries through The North Atlantic Treaty in 1949. The Netherlands was one of those founding members together with United States, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg , Norway, United Kingdom and Portugal.

ROLE OF THE NATO DURING THE XX CENTURY

In the 70s, the government turned to the centre-left. Governments made a redistribution of the budget. The budget of defence and the installation of atomic missiles by the NATO was controversial. Later in the 90s,the government approved an increase on the budget of defence but it was decreased again in the early 90s too. All these measures taken by The Netherlands reflected a discomfort in the framework of the NATO

Currently , Nato has replied The Netherlands that they need to invest more in defence. Because world conflicts are nowadays more close to Europe. But The Netherlands have been the first State that had withdraw its contingent from Afganistan. The NATO hasn´t reproached it to The Netherlands.
